Puerto Princesa, Palawan: Underground River - Booking Options

When visiting the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, you need first a confirmed booking schedule before you can gain a visitor entry permit. Basically, there are two main ways on booking a reservation: one is through DIY or Do-It-Yourself booking, and the other one is by contacting a travel agency to locally arrange the tour for you.

If you prefer a hassle-free tour arrangement, then the travel agency option is just perfect. However, if you want a more challenging way by doing everything yourself, then the DIY option should work best for you.

TRAVEL TIP: Since the Underground River has already been declared as a UNESCO Heritage Site, they already limit the number of tourists visiting per day to preserve the beauty of the place. Be aware of the peak seasons (December to June) and non-peak seasons (July to November) when booking your Underground River Tour.

FIRST OPTION: Do-It-Yourself Booking

1. Contact first the Local Tourism Office of Puerto Princesa to inquiry the availability of your tour date. A lot of visiting tourists and tour groups flock the Underground River during peak seasons so make sure first that your planned visit date is still available.

2. The moment you arrive Puerto Princesa City, head straight to their Local Tourism office and book a trip date. Slots for walk-in tourists are subject to change depending upon the availability left by the way. The details of their local tourism office are found below:

Location: City Coliseum
Address: National Highway, Brgy. San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City, Philippines
Contact Number: +63.48.434.2509, +63.48.723.0904

Check out more details regarding the transport options to Underground River from here: Puerto Princesa Underground River - Getting There.

SECOND OPTION: Packaged Tour

Contact a local travel and tours agency in Palawan who will schedule locally your Underground River Trip. On our case, we booked through Palawan Holidays Travel and Tours. The tour package costs PHP 1,500 and is already reasonable since it includes van service, boat rental fees underground river tour, and buffet lunch. Their contact details are found below:

TRAVEL TIP: The local government of Puerto Princesa enforces a strict rule on "NO PERMIT, NO ENTRY" Policy on the Underground River so be sure to secure your permit and ID during your visit.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River
Declared as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature

For the cancellation policy of the Underground River, tours can be suspended by the local tourism office if weather conditions do not permit. Heavy rains may cause the water level inside the underground river to rise so safety to tourists is their priority. Affected guests may rebook their tour or ask for a refund for the visitor entry permits paid.

    1. Hi Darlyn!

The PHP 1,500 rate is on a per person basis. Pretty reasonable enough already as it includes the van transpo, boat fees, underground river fees, and buffet lunch at Sabang Beach.

    1. Hi Ana / Kristina! I do share the same sentiments and jitters with you when first time traveling to a destination, however embrace the adventures ahead of you and enjoy life! If you're traveling with your family, with kids, better book a tour. Palawan Holidays has one of the best tours in Palawan.

If you're with your friends, better have a DIY trip. Ysabelle Mansion is a suggested place to stay around Puerto Princesa.

During our trip, our pick-up time from our hotel, Ysabelle Mansion, was around 6:45 AM. The land trip going to the Underground River takes around 2 hours so the earlier the better.

    1. Hi Kaizer! I suggest Ysabelle's Mansion which is located just minutes away from the airport and as well as the city center. Also, if you are up for a cheaper option, you can search online for some guest houses or hostels.

    1. Hi Alianne! What time is your flight back to Manila? I think it will be possible... You can arrange a tour to the Underground River, and perhaps you need to leave Puerto Princesa at 7AM... In that case, probably around 3PM you'll be in Puerto Princesa City again... The Underground River is located 2 hours away from Puerto Princesa City..

    1. Hi JJ! How many are you in your travel group? I suggest you hire a van going to the Underground River because it is 2 hours, almost, from the city proper to SAbang port, where the underground river is situated.

For more convenience, you can book a package tour, and I highly suggest the Palawan Holiday as they offer nice tours.

    1. Hi Jonalyn! You may seek assistance through Puerto Princesa City's Tourism office in securing your booking to the underground river. Tricycle drivers around puerto princesa city are well aware where it is located. Also I believe, you can also go directly to Sabang Port, and there also is a tourism office where tickets are issued.

    1. Hi Fe! Yes, it is definitely safe and easy to have a DIY trip to Iwahig Firefly colony. We rented a tricycle to and from Iwahig at a certain fee. Tricycle drivers in Puerto Princesa are very kind and accommodating, and they are mostly familiar with this arrangement.

    1. Hi Michael! Yea, you can still go to the underground river on the afternoon. Better be earlier, as I believe, in order to conserve the beauty of nature, they only have allowed number of visitors per day. There are vans departing Puerto Princesa City which you can ride.

  17. Hi Dan,

I'm a bit confused in regards with the Underground River Tour and Accommodation. Where should we stay in Puerto Princesa in order to take a tour to the river? In Sabang? In Puerto Princesa City?

We have plenty of time, so I would rather spend the night in an "ideal" location, to start the tour early and avoid 2h drive to Sabang Port. What's your advice?

One more question :). The website Puerto-UndergroundRiver.com is down and we're visiting Puerto Princesa on Xmas (28 Dec - 2 Jan). I'm worry about not getting a permit in advance and losing the chance to visit the river. Should I try to book a tour in advance to reserve our spot or its ok if we book something once we get there, (1-2 days in advance)?

    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Alejandro,

I am actually not quite sure what accommodation to expect in Sabang, since the activity that you can do there is the Underground River Tour, and of course the Sabang Beach. Personally, I'd rather stay in Puerto Princesa City because it is the city center and other tourist spots are conveniently located and thus I won't mind traveling roughly 2 hours to Sabang.

If convenience is what you're after, I suggest you book a tour package from any local travel and tours so they can assist you locally in processing your bookings and transpo on your preferred dates.

      Keep traveling! ^^,
