Batad, Ifugao: Ramon's Homestay - Accommodation Review

There aren't much pension houses, guest houses, homestays, and inns in Batad, Banaue, Ifugao and choosing a place to stay will only give you few options. Batad is a small village comprised only by few thousands of locals, and it is roughly an hour away from Banaue. The main roads going here are decently paved, however, the views are kinda scary since the terrains are mountainous.

Some of the places to stay that you may find in Batad are the following: Hillside Inn, Samson's Guesthouse, Rita's Guesthouse, Christina's Guesthouse, Foreigner's Inn, Batad Pension, Grace's Homestay, and Ramon's Homestay.

So why did I choose Ramon over the others? Simply because it is popular among backpackers visiting Batad, and Ramon's has the traditional Ifugao Huts that you can book.

TRAVEL TIP: Overnight rents on various accommodations range from PHP 200 to PHP 500 per person. It's relatively cheap because there are no air-cons and electric fans, only fluorescent lights, because the surrounding temperature is already cold. Bring insect repellent lotions if you are sensitive to mosquitoes and other flying insects. :)

Here are my PROS and CONS for my 2-Night stay at Ramon's Homestay.

  • Very nice local ambiance
  • Ifugao Huts are definitely to die for
  • Decent rooms with mattresses, blankets and pillows
  • Front view of the rice terraces view
  • Mang Ramon and his staff are very hands-on
  • Candles are the only source of light at the Ifugao Hut
  • Ifugao Huts are creepy at night because of the animal bones displayed
  • Shared common bathroom for all guests

TRAVEL TIP: If you opt to contact Mang Ramon through SMS, please expect delay in his response as the mobile signal in Batad is really not that good. As a matter of fact, he hangs his cellphone in a tree somewhere, where the signal is good, and checks it regularly for any accommodation bookings and inquiries.

I honestly had a great time staying at Mang Ramon's homestay. He and his family members running the homestay are very accommodating and cheerful. They make sure that their visitors are well taken care of and has been provided with comfortable accommodations. Value for money as what we usually say is pretty much applicable at Ramon's as their overnight rates are very affordable.

If there's any drawback at Ramon's, it would be the prices of the brewed coffee and the food; although the coffee tasted good as these come from local Ifugao coffee beans. 1 to 2 coffee cups are not enough to satisfy your day. For the prices of the foods served during lunch and dinner, I guess it's justified since they transport their supplies from Banaue Public Market, which may take some time, effort, and money.

For travelers planning to visit Batad soon, I highly recommend Mang Ramon's Homestay. You'll definitely know the reasons why when you had actually visited and stayed here. Another option is Grace's Homestay, if you want to see the rice terraces from a bird's eyeview.

The purpose of visiting Batad is to experience the beauty of nature first hand, live a simple way of life, and enjoy the basic needs everyday. Time may fly slow here, but you'll surely be thankful of enjoying what Batad has to offer!
